What dog doesn’t love a doggies treat? Our canine friends can be sent into a tizzy at the mere mention of the word, and we love them because they’re a great way to reward our well-behaved pups. Next time you reach for a treat and find the bag empty, however, don’t hop in the car. Hop in the kitchen! Making doggies treats can be a fun, loving project, particularly when you involve the kids.

One of the benefits of making your own doggie treats is that you can control the quality of the ingredients that go into them. For the healthiest possible end product, try using the kinds of ingredients that we humans would use for optimum health. Choose organic if possible when buying flours, meals, and peanut butters and avoid the genetically modified, sugar-added alternatives. Also remember that no two dogs are the same. If your pet has special needs (and even if it doesn’t) it’s always best to run your recipes by your Veterinarian before creating them. They’ll be able to tell you if there are any ingredients that should not be used.

In general you should store dog treats the same way you would homemade people cookies. The amount and type of fat in the recipe and your local weather conditions will determine how long you should store your doggie treats before purging them. Fats such as butter, meat or meat juices are more prone to rancidity than fats from vegetable oil or shortening. Treats stored in humid or hot climates will tend to spoil at a faster rate that treats stored in cooler climates.

You can prolong the life of your dog treats by refrigerating or freezing them. Store them in a tightly sealed container or zip lock bag (a freezer bag if your storing in the freezer). Be sure to allow your treats thaw completely before use. (You don’t want Buster chipping a tooth.)

Here is an article about the benefits of making your own homemade healthy dog biscuits. A lot of the dog treats that you find at the local stores are not exactly models for healthy treats. Nowadays I am finding that a lot of owners are resorting to making their own dog biscuits. This article talks a little about the benefits of making your own dog biscuits and a bit about the cons of some of the more popular store bought dog treats.

Healthy Dog Biscuits – For a Happy Pet

For most dogs any time is a good time to snack, and so, it is important to feed them healthy dog biscuits. If your dog loves to snack and is only too happy to ask you for his favorite treat, by jumping and barking, then these dog treats can form an important part of his diet. The good news is that, you can even make natural dog biscuits at home!

This is not to say that you cannot feed your dog commercially available treats. But the problem is that most of these treats contain bulk fillers such as corn, which are difficult to digest for canines. There are some brands however, which make really good quality dog treats which you can safely feed your dog.

The main features of these dog biscuits are:

They are rich in protein. High-quality protein ensures that your dog has a shiny coat and healthy, allergy-free skin. They are easily digestible and don’t play games with your dog’s digestive system.

So, these select brands can be really beneficial for feeding your dog between meals. To identify these brands check the ingredients mentioned on the package. You need to look out for these components for identifying a healthy dog biscuit:

Chicken Breast Oat powder Barley Brown rice Sweet potato Lecithin Vitamin E supplements

Human grade meat, such as chicken breast should be the main component of a healthy dog biscuit.

If you want to bake your own at home, you can do that too! Within an hour or so, you can bake dog treats that will last you an entire week. Here are the things you’ll need:

An oven or a microwave Bowls, spoons and measuring cups. Rolling pins and cookie cutters. Get a bone shaped cutter for making your biscuits even more attractive!

So, go for healthy dog biscuits and keep your pet happy!

After taking my golden retriever for routine visit to the Veterinarian he told me that my dog was basically in good health but had to lose a few pounds. I decided not only to cut back on his treats but to start making some healthy homemade dog treats for him.

By doing this it would ensure that there would be no preservatives or other chemicals and I would be able to control the quality of the ingredients and maybe even the amount of calories he was consuming which would produce a healthier more natural dog treat.

So I started my research on how to make homemade dog treats and hoping I would find some easy dog treat recipes to use. I found a recipe book that had everything I needed. It was kind of like a starter kit.

The book had some real basic and easy dog treat recipes to follow. It also came with a selection of bone shaped cookie cutters so you could make small, medium or large treats.

The real question was would he like these treats as much as the store bought ones he was used to getting. After making the first batch of treats it appeared to be a great success. He actually liked these treats better than the store bought ones.

Realizing how easy it was to make your own dog treats I started collecting cookie cutters that had a dog theme to them. Just as an example I had one that was shaped like a fire plug and another one like a dog house. I also started to collect holiday cookie cutters to make Halloween and Christmas dog treats.

After seeing how much my dog loved the homemade treats I had the idea of making them as holiday treats for all of our “extended” canine family and friends. They were a huge success. It would be a great activity for the whole family. The kids would love making “cookies” for their furry friends.
